About the Book
Islamic counselling is an integrated therapeutic intervention which is based on the Qur’an, hadiths, Islamic practices (sunnah) and cultivation of Islamic values.Islamic counselling is about the consciousness, awareness of God by the means of the counselling process. Islamic counselling is based on an integrated framework guided by the principles of Islamic belief and practices.
This manual outlines the components of Islamic teaching, Muslim counselling, Islamic values and its cultivation. It deals with understanding of the behaviour of Muslim clients through various indigenous psychological tests; counselling processsuch as building therapeutic relationship,responsibility/accountability, characteristics to facilitate the counselling process,psycho-educating counselee about mental health problems; and Islamic counselling interventions whichstrengthen our Divine connection. This manual incorporates information regarding the religious practices such as prayer, recitation of the Holy Qur’an, forgiveness and repentance, taubah, faith and pilgrimage, spiritual support, and Islamic meditative practices. Through these intervention techniques we can cultivate the strength and can improve our mental well-being. Thus, understanding them in a new way is the need of the hour as it is a means by which people with stereotypical perspective about counselling can actually receive help without having their concerns come in way. Therefore, the manual on Islamic Counselling has emphasised upon the core aspects of Islamic Teachings that will help an individual to better adapt himself to the demands of the situation and better prepare himself for the affairs of the world and the hereafter.
The manual is prepared to cater to the needs of people at large. Therefore, this manual is written in a clear and simple style, and provides guidelines in the practice of counselling. This manual is indispensible for the Muslim psychologists, school counsellors, rehabilitation counsellors, mental health professionals, school teachers and social workers.
About the Authors
Dr. Akbar Husain is Professor of Psychology and the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (India). He has more than 37 years of experience, specifically related to Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, Psychological Assessment, Positive Psychology, Counselling Psychology, and Spiritual Psychology. He has authored, co-authored and edited 34 books; published 240 research papers, theoretical articles and book chapters. His current areas of research include spirituality, stress management, happiness, yoga, spiritual fitness, mental health problems, spiritual health, alienation, social and spiritual well-being, stress and its management.
Dr. Fauzia Nazam is working as a UGC Post Doctoral Fellow for Women in the Department of Psychology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. She was awarded Ph.D degree in Psychology in 2016 and qualified UGC NET Examination in 2016. She did Ph.D in the area of Positive Psychology. She has published a number of papers in the referred journals. She passed M. A. in Psychology from Aligarh Muslim University and Advanced Diploma in Counselling Psychology (ADCP) from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. She received Gold Medal in ADCP. Besides she has attended numerous national and international conferences in Psychology. She has co-authored one book Applied Positive Psychology in 2018. Currently she is working on various topics related to the area of Positive Psychology, Spiritual Psychology, Health Psychology, and Islamic Psychology.
Miss Zohra Khatoon passed M.A in psychology from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and qualified UGC NET Examination in 2016. At present she is pursuing Ph.D in the area of Islamic Counselling. Her research interests are in the fields of Islamic Psychology, Positive Psychology, and Spiritual Psychology.
