ABOUT THE BOOK

The present edition is mainly meant to serve as a stimulant to the students of ethics and philosophy. It is also meant to serve as a supplementary reading for the students of Managerial Ethics in Business Schools in India. This book, presented chiefly in the form of a discussion and exposition, will enable the students to look at Indian ethics in a new perspective. The applicability of this approach to Indian ethos and values to our present day situation is expected to become more and more apparent towards the concluding part of this edition. 

In particular, this edition articulates the Indian theory of human ends, called Purusharthas, which is the key point of Indian thought. It provides the students with a colorful, lively, and remarkably accessible introduction to the vast world of Indian ethics and philosophy.  As such, it leads them well into the depths of a long living tradition of over 5000 years. Students can hardly remain unchallenged while following the unfolding of the Indian ethos and values as defined by Indian wisdom.  The readers will also realize that this very wisdom provides them with the few simple keys necessary to diagnose the crisis the modern world is going through.

Calling into question a number of stereotypes, the edition shows clearly that the Indian ethics and philosophy, when understood in their proper perspective, far from being other-worldly, offers an extremely well balanced view of human aims.  It helps students to understand that if mankind wants to live in peace and harmony with all, it ought to strive toward the development of a new civilization.  This edition convinces the readers that, in doing so, the very best of Indian thinking should deserve much of our attention.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. V C George S J, a Jesuit and a Keralite, taught philosophy in St. Xavier’s College, Thumba.   He has been a visiting professor of Business Ethics in XLRI, Jamshedpur, and is currently a visiting faculty member in Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, teaching Formal Logic and Symbolic Logic.  He also taught Indian Philosophy at Sogang University, Seoul, South Korea, for a period of five years.  He holds a doctorate in Indian philosophy from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. He is currently a research guide approved by the same university. He has published seven books in Malayalam and one book in English.  These books take a closer look at some of the values and prejudices people go by.  Indian ethics is one of his major areas of interest.
