The present edition deals with the problem and prospects of environmental governance in India with reference to its spatial dimension. It defines the trend of postmodern urban growth and the complex face of plurality in India. How multilevel governance systems can be attempted to reconcile local action with national and global priorities. This edition seeks to propose a workable system of environmental governance for India that integrates national environmental policies with local priorities and the goals embedded in multilateral environmental agreements. The implications, potential, and realities of environmental governance are defining questions for our generation. This edition also examines key insights from the past and outlines the most important challenges for the future. About the Authors

Dr. Devasish Sarkar obtained his doctorate in engineering from the IIT Khargapur. His professional attention then turned to the complex interface between science and society, especially in the case of environmental crisis in Himalayan region. He worked as senior professional staff at ICIMOD, Kathmandu). Later, he joined the International Academy of Environment in Geneva as Senior Research fellow. Presently, he is a fellow of the India-China Institute, New York and an adviser to the Water Diplomacy Programme at Tufts University, USA. His research in the past 25 years has generated critical trans-disciplinary public interest knowledge on the environment and development.

Ravi Ghosh is an ecological economist by training, with interests in environmental and development economics, and commodity derivatives markets. He obtained his doctorate from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, and Masters’ in Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He has been involved in various global environmental assessments, including the UNEP’s flagship GEO-4 as lead author. He has conducted research and consultancy projects funded by illustrious donors like WWF, UNCTAD, UNEP, and many others. He has published four books, and a host of peer-reviewed journal papers and book chapters, apart from popular articles in newspapers and periodicals. Presently, he is a Visiting Fellow at the School of Social Sciences, Linnaeus University in Sweden.
