About the Book
Main objective of this book is to provide a short, accurate and readable guide to the works of Greek and Latin literature which have generally been found most important and interesting. This book explore classical theory of literary criticism, the emergence of literacy in Greece to the decline of the Western Empire, from Homer to Augustine into five chapters. The very chapter deals with the origin and development of classical criticism of literature from poetics to dialogue. The second chapter reviews Plato’s philosophical component in a theory of literature and Platonic ideas of imitation and art. The third chapter examines Aristotle´s approach to theory of literary criticism. It also looks the manner in which Aristotle departed from the basic notions of his master Plato with regard to the theory of representation of art or mimesis. The fourth chapter examines Aristotle’s six elements of tragedy that make up the structure of the play and how through these elements, a play makes an imitation or mimesis of life and brings about catharsis. Theory of literary criticism after Plato and Aristotle era is explained in last chapter of this book. Hope this book will be helpful for students and teacher of English literature to understand tradition and transformation of criticism in classical literature.
About the Author
Dr. Sudesh Banerjee has done MA in English literature form Jadavpur University, Kolkata and PhD form English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. He teaches in Haldia Government College, Medinipur. His area of research is identity and its Psycho-Social Affect; American Civil War and Globalization; 19th century India; Psychoanalytic Hermeneutics and Shakespeare Studies. He has published more than 20 research papers in the journal of national and international repute. He organised and participated in several Conferences, Seminar and Workshop.
