About the Book

The main objective of this book “Women’s Political Empowerment: Obstacles and Opportunities” is to examine the nature and motivation of women empowerment in world politics. It also analyses strategies adopted around the world to promote women’s political participation/representation; identifies internal and external conditions and factors that facilitate or hinder the creation of an enabling environment for women’s political empowerment; and finally draws policy for consideration for the national and international agencies working in this area. Book is divided into three Sections. First Section discusses the recent developments of women’s political empowerment  in countries of South Asia, that is India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal. Second section explores some of the obstacles that hinder the participation of women in parliament in Asia pacific region, that is Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand while third section examines nature and motivation of the women empowerment in Middle East and African countries. It provides an overview of the movement of women political empowerment in the Arab region and Iran. It also examines new trends in women’s political participation in the African countries like Egypt, Burundi, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

About the Authors

Abida Samiuddin is an eminent feminist scholar and journalist. She did M.A. in History and Urdu Literature from Patna University, Patna. She has contributed number of research articles in reputed journals and newspapers and presented papers in various national and international level seminars and conferences. She had worked in Urdu Academy, Patna for two years. Presently, she is doing freelance journalism and associated with important newspapers and NGOs.

R. Khanam is a senior research fellow of sociology of Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata. Presently, She teaches sociology in Abhedananda Mahavidyalaya, Birbhum. She has contributed some important research papers in journals of national repute and presented papers in national and international level seminars.  She is associated with social activities of women welfare.
