About the Book
Asian economies have now become increasingly important as the focus of development has now shifted from the developed to the developing countries. Now it is some of the key Asian countries which seem to be generally driving the engines of growth in the otherwise recessionary environment across the globe, India and China in particular. This edition looks at some of the other important countries in the Asian region like Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. What this edition focuses on is how it is actually the Urban Areas which are becoming the change agents in some of the key traditional Asian countries. This edition attempts to understand the urbanization process taking place as part of the globalization process in these economies as well as its impact on poverty alleviation and sustainable development. The Volume is intended for research scholars, educationists, bureaucrats, politicians, institutional staff, foreign funding and financial institutions, policy makers and students who would like to get an in-depth understanding of the urbanization process in the Asian economies and the crucial role played by the international institutions in transplanting successful development models and their impact on the lives of the urban poor.
