About the Book

This book critically examines and analyses the linkages between nuclear weapons and national security, with a special focus on contemporary Asia. Particular attention has been paid to the issues of nuclear non-proliferation and Ballistic Missile Defence. Quite significantly, this book has seriously investigated the nuclear weapons programme of North Korea and Iran and its implications for the global efforts towards disarmament. It has also examined the comparative strength and weakness of the nuclear doctrine and policy perspectives of China and Japan in this context. It has also traced the genesis and rationale of national Messile Defence programme of the United States of America and its implications for arms control and disarmament. This book examines the compulsions behind the nuclearisation of India and Pakistan and its real effect on the non-proliferation agenda and strategy. Nuclear Weapon Free Zones could play a decisive role in the direction of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Accordingly, this book has critically investigated the diverse international strategies for establishing nuclear weapons free zones. It has demonstrated that this strategy has been instrumental in preventing the emergence of new Nuclear Weapon State.

The book deals with regional approaches to nuclear non-proliferation. In this context, thorough analysis has been made of the various regional nuclear weapons free zones treaties, like treaty of Tlatelolco, treaty of Rarotonga, treaty of Bankok and Pelindaba treaty.

About the Author

Dr. Surya Narain Yadav is an eminent political scientist specialising on the role of nuclear weapons in international politics, with a particular focus on national security. Nuclear Weapons and their impact on the theories of Balance of Power and Nuclear Deterrence have been his key areas of research investigation. He is an ardent advocate of nuclear non-pfoliferation and total disarmament. The author visited Portugal (Europe) in 2001, and Uganda (Africa) in 1999 and 2000 for undertaking academic and research assignments. His prominent publications include, India’s Foreign Policy: Opportunities and Obstacles in the Post-Cold War Era, India-Uganda Relations: A New Model for South-South Cooperation; Journey of Overseas Indians: Labour to Investor. He has written over 10 books. The author was nominated for the Chinese government fellowship, a joint research programme by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Government of India)  and the Government of the People’s Republic of China in the year 2001. Dr. Yadav’s special areas of research include nuclear energy, environmental sustainability and energy security.
