About the Book

These are times of unprecedented political churning in West Asia and North Africa. The fall of authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen and the continuing political movements in many other countries are manifestations of the significance of transformation of the region’s politics. The traditional debate on the linkage between Islam and democracy needs to be critiqued in and tempered with considerations of this transformatory character of the politics of the region. This edition addresses some of the salient aspects of these transformations, thus cumulatively providing a fairly comprehensive treatment of the intersections of Islam, democracy and political movements in the region. The ideological, gender and political dimensions of the Islamic movements receive attention in the volume. This edition in its historical and political analysis would serve to throw light on some of the significant domains of the political contestation and churning in Middle East.

About the Editors

Rajeesh Kumar is doctoral candidate at the Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was guest faculty at Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and Centre for West Asian and Indian Ocean Studies, University of Calicut, Kerala. He is the co-editor of Eurozone Crisis and the Future of Europe (with J.L Stein, Daniel Daianu & Carlo D’Adda, Palgrave Macmillan, forthcoming) and has published articles and reviews in Journals such as Indian Ocean Survey, Area Studies: A Journal of International Studies and Analysis, Journal of Common Market Studies and Radical Humanist. He has also contributed chapters to various edited volumes and published in various periodicals and magazines. His major areas of interest are IR theories, international organizations, democracy and middle-eastern politics, and internal armed conflicts.

Navaz Nizar is Assistant Professor in the department of Political Science, Dayal Singh Evening College, University of Delhi. He teaches political theory, Indian foreign policy, comparative politics and international relations. He is pursuing PhD on – the role played by Cricket in India-Pakistan Conflicts.
